Did you know you can jump out of a plane, and have fun, in Brandon? Well we do have our own Parachute club here.

The club was created in the 1960′s and is based at the Brandon Airport. There are regular jumps in the summer and it’s always looking for new members.

February: The Skating Oval is now closed for the season.

January 2011  The skating oval is now cleared and open for the public!

December 10, 2010 – Unfortunately the Assiniboine River has flooded over the area and the oval will remain closed until it’s safe to enter. Do not enter the current oval area, the ice is thin and may break at any point.

For those who don’t know yet, the Brandon outdoor skating oval will be opening for the season on December the 10th, weather permitting.

Bring your family for an evening of fun, but make sure to dress warmly. Next week should be quite warmer then the past 2. There are on-site buildings to put on your skates and to leave your shoes. Outdoors there are benches along with fire pits too keep you warm. Parking is abundant but be careful for pedestrians crossing the street. Total skating length is around 1km with a few open spaces to skate around.

To get there turn off 18th st. (between the bridges) onto Hilton Avenue (going East) and continue on past all the light displays until you get to the site.

There is a Badminton club located in the Brandon University Gym that operates on Thursdays and Sundays at 8:30 to 10:00pm and 8:00 to 10:30pm.

The Brandon University gym is full of many sporting opportunities and clubs. It also plays home to the University basketball games for our team (the Bobcats).

There are six different tennis courts in the city of Brandon. For one of them you have to pay, that’s the one situated at the recreation center. However you are most likely to be able to find a free court there.

My personal favorite is the courts on Queen Elizabeth Park.

The city of Brandon has a huge amount of swimming pools all over. The largest swimming pool is located in the Sportsplex on the North end of the city. It has two large pools and the biggest waterslide in the city in the shallow pool.

On certain days admission is reduced and sometimes Tuesdays are free days. But take note that it tends to get very busy on free days.

The squash club has always been located on the corner of Park and 10th st in a small complex. This is the only place that you’d be able to play this fine sport.

Brandon has a few skating rinks with 2 being serviced all year round. Although at the keystone center you wont be able to skate.

The real good skating starts in the winter where the city sets up a skating area beside the 18th st. bridges. It’s well lit and gets quite busy and is easily the featured attraction of our city in the winter.

There are two locations in Brandon to play racquet ball. One is at the YMCA in the downtown area and the other is at the Sportsplex on the North End. Each charges a fee to use the courts but your sure to find open courts at both locations.

Only two locations to play lawn bowling. One is at Rideau park and the other at Stanley park. Neither will be very busy as few people use either locations. The greens should be properly maintained as they are kept by the city.
