BU Strike Update Oct 21

It seems like University officials and BUFA members have gone back into talks this afternoon after committing to not speaking to each other until next week as stated prior. Also the president of BUSU, Deandra Tousignant, has called on students to resume their classes with or without their teachers on Monday. The email asked for senior students to lead lower level classes so that some course work could continue.

BUSU has gained permission from BUFA to make this request to students.

Brandon university students, upset with the strike, continue to “occupy the courtyard”. A few more tents are pitched up and some music is heard over night.

As you all know there is a strike ongoing at Brandon University. How long it will last, no one knows. But there has been a lot of confusion on everyone side about what is going on and who’s saying what.

First off, check the BUFA website everyday for updates. Note that it is heavily biased towards the teachers for obvious reasons. Next, check the BUSU website each day for details. These are also biased towards a teacher point of view and BUSU has officially stated that they support BUFA and their actions. If you have a webmail account, check it every day. This is the only way that the Administration has been able to get a hold of students. Of course all emails are heavily biased against BUFA.

There is also a facebook group called Brandon University Students’ Union (BUSU) which is updated each day with the opinions of BUSU’s leadership as well as many of the students. Responses there are quickly attended too, and if you must ask a question this would be the best place to do it. The president and the rest of the members of BUSU regularly post new information each day and respond to everyone’s questions. The group also posts out events and times for forums for each student body. There has been a education student forum as well as a general forum this week.

Thirdly, check the BUSU youtube channel which shows videos of the forums and all the questions asked.

BUFA Votes in Favor of Strike Action

71% of BUFA’s members have voted in favor of strike action should negotiations fail to resolve the issues at hand. BUFA and the administration will be holding talks later tonight. This does not mean a strike will occur but BUFA has requested it’s members to choose times for striking shifts by 2pm Friday, so they are prepared for action.

It seems that we have broken a record for the hottest October 5th ever in Brandon. Currently it’s 30 degrees. The hottest its ever been in October was 32 on October 1, 1992.

Peace Officer Assaulted at the Brandon Jail

At 12:45 AM this morning a woman called police to report a disturbance in a residence on the 600 block of Rosser Avenue. When police attended the residence they learn’t that the woman was causing the problems and she was taken into custody.

While being held at the Brandon Correctional Centre she assaulted a female Corrections officer by kneeing her in the lower body. The 36 year old Brandon woman will appear in court on December 5th for assault on a Peace Officer.

Assault and Robbery by a Youth

A 13 year old girl and her friend reported at 8:48 PM on Tuesday that they had been assaulted and robbed of a cell phone and 2 media players. The thief had stolen the goods and threw the girls down to the ground causing a upper body injury and then fled.

They named a possible suspect and police located and arrested a 15 year old female who had been out passed her court ordered curfew. She will appear in court for a number of charges from assault to breach of probation.

Stolen Ford Windstar from 9th St.

A blue 2003 Ford Windstar with license FHF-283 was stolen from the 700 block of 9th st. after the owner had briefly left the keys in the ignition.

Reg Helwer (PC) and Drew Caldwell win elections in Brandon Manitoba

A very close race was run in the Brandon West campaign with Reg Helwer taking the win by only 173 votes.

All over the province NDP supporters are reveling in their parties win of 37 electoral divisions. While the Manitoba PC leader Hugh McFadyn announced that he would step down after winning only 19 divisions. The Liberals managed to keep one division which was their leader’s, Jon Gerrad, own River Heights in Winnipeg.

Reg Helwer to win Brandon West Riding

With 51/52 ED reporting, and a lead of 171 votes over Jim Murray, it seems like Reg Helwer will win the Brandon West riding for the 2011 Manitoba provincial election.

Drew Caldwell NDP to win Brandon East Riding

At this time it seems that Drew Caldwell will take the Brandon East riding in the 2011 provincial election; with 44/52 ED reported and a lead of over 800 votes over Mike Wadell (PC), it seems like Drew will take it.

In Brandon West the race is still very close with Reg Helwer ahead by 150 votes with 49/52 ED reported.
