Built in 1882 for Thomas Mayne Daly, who was Brandon’s first mayor and lawyer, it remains to be one of the oldest buildings in Brandon and the oldest building on 18th st. After Daly had moved away it became a children’s shelter and in 1978 it became a museum with the help of Brandon Museum Inc..

The museum consists of three levels. On the ground floor there is a general store, featuring various cans and antiques from the era, there is a dining room, a furnished living room and a kitchen. The second story features a washroom, a child’s bedroom; along with a 112 year old doll house and many old children’s books and toys, a gallery of dresses and attire for that period of time, an other bedroom and when I went there was one more larger room full of hockey memorabilia such as jerseys, hockey sticks, old skates and many photos of old local hockey teams. In the basement there was a large number of various tools, sewing machines, dentistry equipment, butcher equipment and other machines like addressographs.

Admission is 6$ for adults and 5$ for students and seniors.

Time to see everything: About 1 hour for my group.

There is a sign put up by the Historic Sites Advisory Board of Manitoba that explains the significance of this building.

“Established in 1882, Brandon soon became one of the foremost agricultural exhibition centres in Western Canada. In 1913, the city was the site of the Dominion Fair.

Display building number II was constructed in that year to promote agricultural and manufacturing innovations from across Canada. The structure is a rare surviving example of agricultural buildings constructed in Manitoba. It was designed by Walter H. Shillinglaw and David Marshall, two prominent Brandon architects. This building has been used continuously for exhibition purposes for the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba. It remains a centre for promoting agricultural development in the southwestern area of Manitoba. In scale and composition the building is typical of the Beaux – Arts Classicism style of architecture popular for monumental buildings around the turn of the century.”

The building is located on the keystone centre grounds, you can’t miss it.

The Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium had been an idea passed around by city councilors in the 1950’s and 60’s. It was first mentioned in 1953 but forgotten and remembered for the next decade until finally it’s current location was chosen on the Brandon University campus. It was fully built in 1969 and cost 2 million dollars.

The auditorium has over 800 seats and has been the host of events and shows from jazz festivals to BTO and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. The specially designed interior makes for a superb acoustical experience. It also features many halls that can be used for banquets, recitals and dancing. The auditorium has everything that a major concert hall has, including 8 dressing rooms, and can be used for whatever your event’s needs are.

Another thing that makes the auditorium stand out is it’s unique architecture. The only building of it’s type in Brandon, it gives the auditorium a modernesque feel while still allowing the viewer to know exactly what the building is about.

It was first founded as a Baptist College in 1889 and has come a long way since then. The university received it’s charter on June the 5th 1967. After this event the tallest building on campus, McMaster Hall (22 stories tall), was built followed by the J. R. Brodie Science Center and the music building which was named by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II “Queen Elizabeth II Music Building”.

Clark Hall was built in 1906 and is the building that looks the oldest on the whole campus. Originally set as the women residence it now serves as the administration HQ of the university. The building is very well preserved and gives you an understanding of the architectural style of the era.
