The telescope is located on one of the highest, if not the highest point in the city of Brandon. It’s a .41m telescope mounted on the roof of McMaster Hall with panoramic views of Brandon, the Grand Valley and the Brandon Hills.

If you wish to have more opportunities to use the telescope, think about enrolling at BU in the astronomy courses available.

Visits can now be arraigned by calling the Brandon University at 728-9520.

Brandon Manitoba, is home to 2 movie theatres. One is the Capitol and the other is not as well known but still just as important as it serves the community in showcasing films which you wouldn’t find at the Capitol. That would be the J. R. C. Evans Theatre. It’s maintained by volunteers of the Brandon Film Festival.

Located at Brandon University in the George T. Richardson Building, it’s home to a single small screen but does have a little concessions area during screenings where you can by popcorn. The theatre is found by walking to the courtyard of the University, which is just around the building with large glass windows, and as you enter the building you will see the theatre directly in front of yourself.

Tickets are 6$.

Film Line: (204) 727-9704

The theatre is closed in the summer but will resume operations in September.

Some of the movies screen this year were:

Seven Samurai

Barney’s Version

Fathers and Sons

The Illusionist

Blue Valentine

And many more!

Hosted by the Brandon & Area Car Enthusiasts, BACE, Crusin’ the Dub has been an event that ushers in summer each year. Hundreds of cars and their enthusiasts flock to Rosser avenue and allow the whole city to see their beauties. Rosser is cut off to regular traffic and instead becomes a giant pedestrian only area.

The event draws crowds each year, up and over a thousand by estimates which is a great boost to the downtown Brandon area. There is typically local live music playing outside and small food vendors throughout the streets.

The event takes place several times a year and is located between 6th and 13th st. on Rosser avenue from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Admission is free, you just park your car nearby and walk in and enjoy the festivities.

The event is set to take place on the following dates for 2011:

Thursday, June 2nd

Thursday, July 7th

Thursday, August 4th

Thursday, September 1st

It also contains many items and antiques from the early 30′s and 40′s that were used at the training sites such as equipment, models, supplies and uniforms. The museum’s website has an online directory of all of it’s features.

Currently the air museum contains the following aircraft:

Cornell

Harvard

Avro Ansen

Blenheim

Lysander

Beech

Stinson

A few of these aircraft have been flown and some are still in the process of restoration.

Directions: Take Highway 10 North 1km and turn to the airport and follow the road down until you see a sign pointing to the air museum.

Built in 2008 by the city of Brandon, Hanbury Hill is a premier location to go for an evening of sledding. The city built up this large mound just off the the North Hill behind the Sportsplex, with an excellent panoramic view of the city.

There is a gazebo for public use right by the hill and a large area reserved for parking. The back portion of the hill can be used for younger children as it’s not as steep as the South side of the hill.

To get there, head down Braecrest Dr. until you see a large sign saying Hanbury Hill. It’ll be right after a block of housing units and the area will look forested. Just go down the road a bit and you’ll see the hill.

February: The Skating Oval is now closed for the season.

<del>January 2011 The skating oval is now cleared and open for the public!</del>

December 10, 2010 – Unfortunately the Assiniboine River has flooded over the area and the oval will remain closed until it’s safe to enter. Do not enter the current oval area, the ice is thin and may break at any point.

For those who don’t know yet, the Brandon outdoor skating oval will be opening for the season on December the 10th, weather permitting.

Bring your family for an evening of fun, but make sure to dress warmly. Next week should be quite warmer then the past 2. There are on-site buildings to put on your skates and to leave your shoes. Outdoors there are benches along with fire pits too keep you warm. Parking is abundant but be careful for pedestrians crossing the street. Total skating length is around 1km with a few open spaces to skate around.

To get there turn off 18th st. (between the bridges) onto Hilton Avenue (going East) and continue on past all the light displays until you get to the site.

(03/12/10 Correction, only the lights will be turned on on December the 3rd)

Built in 1882 for Thomas Mayne Daly, who was Brandon’s first mayor and lawyer, it remains to be one of the oldest buildings in Brandon and the oldest building on 18th st. After Daly had moved away it became a children’s shelter and in 1978 it became a museum with the help of Brandon Museum Inc..

The museum consists of three levels. On the ground floor there is a general store, featuring various cans and antiques from the era, there is a dining room, a furnished living room and a kitchen. The second story features a washroom, a child’s bedroom; along with a 112 year old doll house and many old children’s books and toys, a gallery of dresses and attire for that period of time, an other bedroom and when I went there was one more larger room full of hockey memorabilia such as jerseys, hockey sticks, old skates and many photos of old local hockey teams. In the basement there was a large number of various tools, sewing machines, dentistry equipment, butcher equipment and other machines like addressographs.

Admission is 6$ for adults and 5$ for students and seniors.

Dating from 1907, the Art Gallery and it’s supporters have provided a venue to exhibit the art of the prairies. By 1959 a permanent place was established to exhibit the art and to provide art lessons. It was named the Brandon Allied Arts Council. In 1989 the gallery was moved again to the now Convergy’s building on Princess and was renamed to the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba. In the year 2000 the building was once more moved to it’s now current location.

The gallery has a 4300 sq. ft. main exhibition hall which is regularly filled with various exhibits. The gallery also provides various art classes in photography, digital media, ceramics, drawing and many others. Each year hundreds of people take these courses.

From April 29 to June 19, 2010 the main gallery is filled with an exhibition called Hockey Town.

Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Thursday open until 9:00 PM

710 Rosser Avenue, Unit 2
Brandon, Manitoba
R7A 0K9

204. 727.1036

There is a free parking center on 7th st. if you enter on Princess avenue. Otherwise there are tolls on the roads around the gallery.
